Nautilus - the Titan of the Depths

Nautilus

the Titan of the Depths

UTILITY

A lonely legend as old as the first piers sunk in Bilgewater, the armored goliath known as Nautilus roams the dark waters off the coast of the Blue Flame Isles. Driven by a forgotten betrayal, he strikes without warning, swinging his enormous anchor to save the wretched, and drag the greedy to their doom. It is said he comes for those who forget to pay the “Bilgewater tithe”, pulling them down beneath the waves with him—an iron-clad reminder that none can escape the depths.

Nautilus Build Guide

Overview

If your team needs CC, then Nautilus is one of the premier champions in the game at locking down opponents. He brings a strong kit to the table that doesn’t require a high skill ceiling to be effective, thanks to his ultimate being an unavoidable point and click knock-up from long distance. Top 3 Things to Remember About Nautilus

  1. Stagger Blow means your first attack on a target will stun them -- you want to layer this with both your Dredge Line and Depth Charge to lock a target in place.

  2. Dredge Line can be used on terrain, which means you can use it to help escape from tight situations, or you can hook towards a wall to get closer to an opponent to land an easy Depth Charge.

  3. Titan’s Wrath provides a shield that’s going to make up a significant part of your durability early game -- be sure to fight around the timing of this ability.

Strengths

Nautilus has a lot of kill potential early game, and if your opponent allows you to take bush control bot lane, just the idea that you might hook them will keep them on the back foot. As the game progresses, he’s one of the best champions in the game at forcing the issue -- you can hook to an opponent or even just near them and hit a Depth Charge to guarantee an action, for better or for worse. The best Nautilus players will go in and use everything at their disposal while still being able to peel back to keep their life.

Weaknesses

As a melee champion, he’s prone to being poked out of the lane by ranged pairs in bot lane. While this can be mitigated by landing a hook to force a fight, if you don’t do it before you’ve been poked down, it could just lead to your death. That’s also assuming you can even hit the hook in the first place -- it’s not a hard one to hit compared to Blitzcrank or Thresh, but unintentionally hooking into a minion or a wall may expose you to danger. Sometimes, when Nautilus goes in, there’s no real way out, so he must find a kill to make it worth it.

Game Plan

  1. Early Game: Look for an aggressive play as early as level 2 -- with Dredge Line and Rip Tide, you can easily force summoner spells if you’re the one with the initiative in lane. If you can get ahead, it can be easy to continue forcing fights if the opponent doesn’t have their summoner spells.

  2. Mid Game: You’ll want to be maneuvering around the map as much as possible -- wherever you feel like a fight is about to happen, be sure to be in the area. Nautilus’ CC can easily swing fights in your favor.

  3. Late Game: While it should be as simple as pointing at a champion and clicking R on them, Depth Charge can actually be difficult to hit late game as enemies will be extremely wary of you. You may find yourself locked down by the enemy frontline without being able to do anything, so be sure to look for good hook angles, and short of that, you can just save you abilities to help keep your carries alive.
