UTILITY

A renowned harpooner from the slaughter docks of Bilgewater, Pyke should have met his death in the belly of a gigantic jaull-fish… and yet, he returned. Pyke Build Guide

Overview

Should the support take the kill from their carry? Is the sky blue? If you feel at peace with that sequence of questioning, then Pyke may be the champion for you. Take the kill. And the next one. And no one can reasonably get mad at you. They will, of course, still get unreasonably mad at you, but what can you do? Keys to Remember About Pyke Support

  1. Take the kills with your ultimate because you give extra gold to your teammates.

  2. You should be looking to roam around the map as much as possible to maximize your strengths.

Strengths

Pyke is one of the most mobile supports in the game when it comes to getting from one lane to the next, which means he’s ideal for players who want to make plays all around the map. Ghostwaver Dive also allows you to disappear briefly from your lane to then re-hit it, or if you use it when coming back from a base -- both of these scenarios can catch opponents off guard and give you a big advantage. Pyke’s ultimate can also help you cleanup team fights, which means his best pattern is to start a fight, disengage, and then look to secure kills.

Weaknesses

If you don’t get the reset on your ultimate, it’s going to leave you in a lot of bad spots during team fights, and because the animation is very big, it’s something players can definitely dodge if they’re looking for it. Pyke’s abilities are dynamic and offer a lot of outplay potential, but that means you can sometimes outplay yourself -- he’s a champion with a relatively difficult learning curve.

Game Plan

  1. Early Game: Any time you can land a hook onto the enemy carry, you can follow it up with a Phantom Undertow to force the issue. You have plenty of kill pressure even before level 6, though it’s level 6 where you are truly unlocked as kills are extra efficient for Pyke thanks to his passive.

  2. Mid Game: Good Pyke support players will often be at the top or near the top of their team’s kill counter, and that’s because they’re always going to be on the lookout for kill opportunities throughout the mid game. Your mobility means you should almost always be able to arrive at a fight if you want it, and as long as you’re not significantly behind, you should always want it.

  3. Late Game: At this point, it’s going to be a lot harder for you to secure kills, so make sure you are playing as much around landing a hook as possible. You still have a lot of pick potential thanks to windows where teams are moving from point A to point B, or if they’re trying to farm a side lane. Pick your spots around those timings!
